TY - JOUR PY - 2015// TI - Expansive learning in Firearms training: the HE/professional learning interface JO - Police practice and research A1 - Beighton, Chris A1 - Poma, Sabrina A1 - Leonard, Vincent SP - 378 EP - 390 VL - 16 IS - 5 N2 - This paper examines the developing relationship between Higher Education (HE) practices and professional training for UK Firearms Officers. We examine the potential for effective partnership in this setting, focusing on the affordances of theories of expansive learning. Their impact is explored through interviews of officers from three UK forces, focusing on the relations between academic and more professionally oriented learning. These inform a discussion of workplace learning environments, challenging some commonplaces about the role of HE and the drive to professionalisation in the context of police firearms training and the issues of responsibility and effectiveness.
