Saewyc (doi: 10.1111/j.1552-6909.2011.01336.x) on the original article (doi: 10.1111/j.1552-6909.2011.01221.x). We would like to thank the authors for their thoughtful commentary and discussion, which further expands our article and the complexities of sexual exploitation of adolescents. Sexual exploitation of adolescents is a broad concept encompassing a variety of sex behaviors, acts, and/or sexual risk taking. The authors raise concerns surrounding the concepts of "survival sex," and sex exchange or the transaction or trading of sex for drugs, money, shelter, or food. The authors provided sources and statistics to support the statement, "Young males are also victims of domestic and international sex trafficking, indeed, that research has found equivalent rates for them as for young females". We agree that large population-based studies should examine the many forms of sexual exploitation that adolescents are experiencing; however, we stress that researchers must use carefully and thoughtfully defined concepts so as not to confuse various forms of sexual exploitation that on the surface may appear similar.
