N2  - With a knowledge of the mean annual ground temperatures, the general lithology at a given location and a regional distribution of the geothermal flux from the earth's interior, it is possible to make reasonable estimates of the presence or absence of permafrost and its thickness. The prediction is complicated by changes of the local surface temperature in the past due to a variety of factors ranging from changes of climate to forest fires.
