In order to illustrate the effect of individual distracting factors on driving behavior, 66 test persons with driving experience were instructed to drive round a secured test track. During the test, various types of distraction and their influence on road safety were examined in detail. In cooperation with the automobile clubs ADAC and OEAMTC together with the Institute for Sleep-Wake Research (ISWF), the Austrian Institute of Technology (AIT) and Neurotraffic, a set of driving and distraction tasks was designed that was to be performed by volunteer test drivers on a secured sector of the OEAMTC road testing centre in Teesdorf. The results showed that drivers have a misguided feeling of safety that they can handle a vehicle sufficiently well in spite of being distracted. Keywords: Driver distraction
