The authors used statistical models and isolated those factors most prominent in truck crashes, while controlling for weather topography and highway geometry. Among their findings were the discoveries that alcohol contributes to more severe injuries in truck crashes; more frequent and severe crashes occur at dawn and dusk; crashes on local roads are less severe than those on highways and crashes involving snow; crashes that involve farm equipment cause more injuries than other truck crashes; and crashes occurring on snow, ice, slush are less severe than those involving other pavement conditions.
