N2  - Juvenile justice systems across the United States use various assessment processes and measures to allocate intensive services to those youths who are most at-risk of reoffending. This study examines important dimensions of risk assessment and explores the utility of a local risk assessment practice adapted from a series of risk factors used by the Orange County Juvenile Probation Office. The analyses in this longitudinal study address whether the risk assessment provides equally valuable information for females and males. Among this sample of high-risk adolescents, results indicate that this risk assessment is not equally predictive for females and males. These results have implications for the use of gender specific norms, or assessments that are appropriate for both males and females. Important considerations and analytical techniques for a thorough examination of assessment practices are summarized along with suggestions for enhancing future risk assessment procedures.<p /> <p>Language: en</p>
