N2  - Setting event literature has generally failed to address issues of concern in the measurement and control of the three terms of the operant, including antecedents, behaviors, and consequences. We review experiments that do not sufficiently demonstrate the existence of setting events, along with some that include procedures appropriate for investigating setting events. We consider setting events to be a fourth term of an operant, and suggest that in order for an examination of setting events, precise measurement and, in some cases, control, of the three-term contingency is necessary. Additionally, we suggest some methods for approaching this challenge.<p /> <p>Language: en</p>
