This article describes the initial steps of an effort to apply the action research process to design and evaluate a theory-based program of intervention to reduce and prevent youth violence in a high-risk urban environment. Through the use of a conceptual framework that is easily understandable, as well as consistent with research and theory about violence, twelve objectives were developed to design and evaluate Responding in Peaceful and Positive Ways (RIPP), a violence prevention curriculum for sixth graders. The use of the action research paradigm has facilitated the identification of important mediating variables and will provide valuable information for reducing and preventing youth violence.
