TY - JOUR PY - 1994// TI - The Balkanization of special education: proliferation of categories for "new" behavioral disorders JO - Education and treatment of children A1 - Forness, Steven R. A1 - Kavale, Kenneth A. SP - 215 EP - 227 VL - 17 IS - 3 N2 - Recent attempts to create new categories or subcategories of special education have the potential not only to tie up administrative and diagnostic resources but also to create an increasingly less manageable array of separate special education programs. This Balkanization process is examined in reference to five select disorders, attention deficit disorder, traumatic brain injury, fetal alcohol syndrome, prenatal substance abuse, and fragile X syndrome. Advantages and disadvantages are discussed along with possible solutions to this problem.
