Despite these differing descriptions there is general agreement on the range of difficulties that hyperactive children display. A variety of potential causal factors for hyperactivity have received empirical support. This gives credence to the view of hyperactive children representing a heterogeneous population. Pharmacological therapy, although somewhat effective, can produce many unwanted side effects. Behavior management programs typically have shown limited success in the treatment of hyperactivity. Hyperactive children may have specific problems that make programs based entirely on positive reinforcement less effective. These problems are discussed in relation to the use of punishment procedures to establish responsible behavior based upon avoidance learning.
