The characteristics, causes, and management of self-injury are presented to assist educators in devising treatment strategies for relatively minor forms of self-injury and to recognize students for whom referral for evaluation by more extensively trained professionals is appropriate. Through becoming more familiar with the literature, educators and clinicians may avoid inadvertently increasing self-injury through positive or negative reinforcement.
