N2 - This study was designed to reduce the inappropriate behavior exhibited by a 10-year-old retarded male while riding the bus to and from school. The bus driver was trained to administer a token reinforcement program utilizing a hand counter on the dash. The route was divided into intervals on the basis of geographic landmarks. Points were awarded, withheld, or taken away at the end of each interval via the hand counter, and backup reinforcers were delivered either at home or at school.
RESULTS of a multiple baseline design across afternoon and morning bus rides showed substantial decreases in disruptive behavior. These data thus suggest that driver training in behavior management techniques, when supplemented by either school or home-based programs, may be one means of reducing potentially dangerous situations that are a result of misbehavior on school busses.
