N2  - This research examined the percieved quality of downtown scenes in relation to physical features of these scenes. Sixty passers-by (one at each of 60 downtown scenes in Columbus, Ohio) were asked to assess the emotional quality of the scenes. At the same time, five experts rated physical features of the scenes. It was found that enhancements in perceived quality were associated with decreases in the prominence of vehicles and increases in enclosure, sound, upkeep and unity. Tests of differences between scenes selected to differ on these features confirmed the correlational results; evaluative responses were more favorable for the scenes with fewer vehicles, more enclosure, more sound, better upkeep or more unity.<p /> <p>Language: en</p>
