Patients being discharged from inpatient specialist mental health care should get follow-up support within three days to reduce their risk of suicide, a group of MPs has urged. In its final report of its inquiry into suicide prevention, the House of Commons Health Committee said it was “disappointing” that the government’s January 2017 updated national suicide prevention strategy did not take on the committee’s recommendation, made in 2016, to improve on the current standard that patients should get follow-up support within seven days of discharge.
