TY - JOUR PY - 2016// TI - Media reporting and coverage of suicide in Portuguese media JO - Revista Portuguesa de Saúde Pública A1 - Araújo, Rita A1 - Pinto-Coelho, Zara A1 - Lopes, Felisbela SP - 173 EP - 185 VL - 34 IS - 2 N2 - According to the World Health Organization (WHO) there are one million suicides every year worldwide. Although suicide media coverage does not promote suicidal behaviors, the way the phenomenon is portrayed by the media may have that impact. Media could have an active role in suicide prevention, and so it is important to understand their approach to this issue. We will analyze media's representations of suicide, through the news published in six Portuguese newspapers in 2013. Our theoretical framework is within the news framing, and we will apply critical discourse analysis tools in order to analyze suicide texts thoroughly.
