TY - JOUR PY - 1985// TI - Four-wheel drive tractors--a review JO - Journal of agricultural engineering research A1 - Rackham, D. H. A1 - Blight, D. P. SP - 185 EP - 201 VL - 31 IS - 3 N2 - This paper starts by tracing the history of four-wheel drive tractors up to the 1960s, when they became relatively commonplace. There are several different types of four-wheel drive tractor, the principal differentiating factor being the steering arrangement. These are summarized, together with the principal limitations of each type. There follows a review of work carried out in investigating the improved performance charateristics of four-wheel drive tractors. Consideration is given to the effect of four-wheel drive, and the consequent reduction in slip, on soil compaction. After reviewing the beneficial effect of four-wheel drive on tractor stability, the future role of four-wheel drive in tractor design is discussed. Current sales trends indicate that this role is increasing.
