N2  - The massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School (Connecticut, USA) has prompted many efforts to prevent this from happening again. The purpose of this study is to estimate the probability that a student will be killed in an in-school shooting using data from a relatively recent 13.6 year period, during which time the annual US population included 55 million K-12 students. From Columbine (Colorado, USA 1999) to Sandy Hook (2012), there were 61 deaths, thus a one in 939,000 chance a student would be killed while in K-12 education anytime during the 13.6 year period. In-school shootings resulting in death to a student are extremely rare events. The risk of death in a motor vehicle accident for similarly age children is 2,400 times greater.
