TY - JOUR PY - 2006// TI - Driver assist systems: Comfort and safety JO - VDI Berichte A1 - Fuhrmann, KH SP - 19 EP - 34 VL - 2006 IS - 1960 N2 - While driver assist systems have only existed as a defined term for about a decade, their history goes back much earlier. In view of the history of motor vehicle development, the amount of traffic and the greater technical possibilities available today, driver assist systems in series production are becoming ever more important. The latest technology not only burnishes the image of the automobile manufacturer, but also offers the vehicle drivers and their passengers direct and indirect advantages. As far as modern driver assist is concerned, that would mean a noticeable increase in convenience by easing the burden on the driver and possibly an increase in safety, in some cases. The current state of development means that it is too early to clearly say what proportion of driver assist systems will be convenience systems and what will be safety systems. Rather, it is increasingly a mixture of both, although it is the safety aspects which are giving impetus to volume production of new developments.
