SP - 2597 EP - 2608 VL - 24 IS - 22 N2 - Neuropsychiatric and neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, depression, epilepsy, schizophrenia, and anxiety pose a major public health problem and are associated with the considerable burden of disease, suicides, physical comorbidities, high economic costs, and poor quality of life. There is a recent upsurge in global interest toward the field of herbal or traditional medicine and these drugs are gaining popularity both in developing and developed countries because of their natural origin and fewer side effects. On the contrary, conventional synthetic drugs have been reported with unwanted but unavoidable side effects having poor patient compliance. Therefore, herbal treatment is being preferred over conventional treatments as an effective remedy for many brain disorders. Ayurveda provides a holistic approach of treatment along with a list of nootropic herbs known for their multi-dimensional utility in various conditions. Scattered information is available pertaining to traditional Ayurvedic remedial options for various mental disorders. The present review encompasses: (i) Common brain disorders and the associated changes (ii) Ayurvedic holistic approach to managing neurodegenerative and depressive disorders, and (iii) important Ayurvedic single herbs and polyherbal formulations with the description of their traditional usage and administration. Concurrently, it opens up for further research and standardization on Ayurvedic nootropic herbs.
