I congratulate Stewart and colleagues in attempting to create an apolitical consensus strategy for addressing violence from firearms in the US. The authors correctly point out the polarizing viewpoints on the issue and the need to develop inclusive and effective solutions. They plainly state, “Firearm ownership is a liberty protected by the US Constitution and in no way advocates revocation of the controversial Second Amendment.” They also point out the increase in injury-related death rates that have been documented in the 21st century and advocate proposals to address this problem. Unfortunately, such proposals remain under attack by organizations that serve only to muddy the waters.
