N2  - Accident reports, field evaluations, state police and highway engineer questionnaire replies, and other data sources were used to conduct a general study of accidents involving highway bridges in virginia. Several geometric characteristics were found to predominate at many of the arterial and primary system bridges investigated. Some of the more salient characteristics were pavement transitions on bridge approaches, approach roadway curvature to the left, narrow bridge roadway widths, intersections adjacent to bridges, and combinations of these and other geometric factors. On interstate highway bridges, poor surface conditions were found to prevail during a significantly high proportion of accidents. Several case studies are presented that illustrate some of the characteristics of bridge sites that have been involved in highway accidents. [TRID]<p /> <p>Language: en</p>
