TY - JOUR PY - 1988// TI - Transport in rural areas of developing countries: empirical findings from Western Province, Zambia JO - Transportation research record A1 - Immers, Ben H. A1 - Malipaard, Ernst J. A1 - Oldenhof, Michel J. H. SP - 51 EP - 58 VL - 1167 IS - N2 - The focus of this paper is the transport problems of people living in rural areas of developing countries. Because the majority of these people are engaged in small-scale farming, special attention is given to the relationship between agricultural activities and transport. It is indicated that although the quality of the road infrastructure in the Western Province of Zambia is very poor, attention should be paid first of all to both the small variety and low availability of intermediate transport means. In addition, it is noted that agricultural transport is heavily influenced by the organizational structure of farming households and by governmental involvement.
