N2  - The development history of the procedures included in Chapter 4 of the 1985 Highway Capacity Manual for the analysis and design of freeway weaving areas is reviewed. Noting the studies and efforts providing input, the final development of procedures under the National Cooperative Highway Research Program Project 3-28B is detailed. The merging of the weaving and nonweaving speed prediction algorithm developed by JHK & Associates with the concepts of weaving configuration and type of operation, developed by the Transportation Training and Research Center of the Polytechnic University is explained. A comparative analysis is conducted indicating the superior accuracy of the final procedure to its predecessors.
