N2 - Professionals in the field of family violence participated in telephone interviews that included the question: "How would you address content with Aboriginal men in couple counseling who use abusive behavior toward their intimate partner?." Responses were analyzed using the concept mapping method. Resulting concepts included cultural, Western, traditional ways, what a healthy relationship is (and is not), men's self-responsibility and accountability to family and community.
RESULTS of the analysis were compared and contrasted with the available literature. There were similarities between participants and the literature on the roles of substance misuse and mental health as well as specific cognitive and behavioral strategies. The main differences centered on the necessity of a culturally based approach grounded within the community's needs and strengths as well as relationships between those who deliver the program with professionals and other agencies.
