I read with interest the recent article by Barnes et al.1, which discussed common data elements (CDEs) recommended to improve the quality of studies of military-related post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). I am concerned that among these CDEs, the authors have neglected inclusion of an instrument for the assessment of a potentially critical confounder in studies of PTSD in military populations. Mefloquine, an antimalarial drug used widely by the U.S. military over the past three decades, is known to independently cause psychiatric adverse effects, including nightmares, insomnia, depression, and anxiety, which can last years after use.
