Their fundamental question-are children with chronic health conditions indeed at risk for "psychopathology?" Relatedly, they addressed the question as to whether or not differences existed between different disease groups in terms of adjustment outcomes. The noncategorical approach (e.g., Pless & Perrin, 1985), which argued that the commonalities across disease groups far outweighed differences, stood in relatively stark contrast to those that argued for more disease-specific approaches (e.g., Rolland, 1987).
