TY - JOUR PY - 2004// TI - Reducing delays at pedestrian crossings - A change in thinking JO - Traffic engineering and control A1 - Robertson, Greg SP - 235 EP - 239 VL - 45 IS - 7 N2 - Over a four-year period engineers in the city of Leeds have been reviewing all mid-block crossings, both inside and outside the UTC area with the aim of reducing the time pedestrians have to wait before getting a green man signal. A wide range of techniques were deployed dependent on the characteristics of the individual crossing. Pedestrian delay was measured at the sites before and after treatment and a vast amount of data has been collected. Data collected so far shows that delays to pedestrians have been reduced by over 30%. The author concludes that the techniques used could easily be applied to other areas and similar benefits could well be achieved.
