TY - JOUR PY - 1997// TI - What we need to know about walking JO - Traffic engineering and control A1 - Weatherall, R SP - 385 EP - 387 VL - 38 IS - 7-8 N2 - This paper recommends that walking should be included in national transport statistics. The exclusion of journeys under one mile from National Travel Survey summary tables should be ended. Instead, data could perhaps be presented separately for local and for inter-urban journeys. The question on the Census should ask about transport use in general, not just journeys to work, since local authorities use these data in the absence of other local data on modal split. Alternatively, ways could be explored to expand the NTS to provide more reliable data at local level. Walking should be included in traffic forecasts. A measure of pedestrian injury risk comparable with other modes is essential. The National Travel Survey data on walking associated with public transport should be made more easily available.
