TY - JOUR PY - 1991// TI - Rimob impact attentuator. Findings after eight years of practical experience JO - Traffic engineering and control A1 - Kusters, MM A1 - Van der Drift, MJM SP - 352 EP - 355 VL - 32 IS - 7-8 N2 - The first RIMOB Impact Attenuator with crumpling tubes was installed on a hard shoulder in the Netherlands in 1982. Since then, their number has grown to over 200. To ascertain whether the RIMOB has proven as effective and safe in practice as tests originally suggested, an evaluation has been carried out, from which some conclusions are drawn. The RIMOB appears to function well in the case of both head-on and side collisions. Despite impact speeds of over 100 km/hr, no fatal accidents have occurred. There were only six cases of slight injuries out of 38 recorded accidents. The lateral and vertical stability of the RIMOB seems to be adequate. Experience with the RIMOB as a construction is also overwhelmingly positive. It can be installed or replaced very quickly.
