N2  - This paper presents a new method to identify real distances from moving pictures. The method is based on the fact that, in order to investigate traffic events, there is no need to know the absolute co-ordinates of points; all that is needed are the distances between two defined points. Usually, distances of interest are defined by two points on the same picture frame or by the same points on a few successive frames. The direct advantage of the proposed method lies in the fact that no control points need to be marked along the roadway. Instead, the use of a vehicle on which are two points (the distance between which is known) is sufficient to estimate the transformation function. The indirect advantage of using the proposed method is the lower cost of investigation, the increase in safety and, most important, the much greater flexibility in choosing an investigation site at any time.     <p>Language: en</p>
