TY - JOUR PY - 1990// TI - Monitoring tactile markings on shared pedestrian/cycle routes JO - Traffic engineering and control A1 - Williams, M. C. SP - 655 EP - 659 VL - 31 IS - 12 N2 - Tactile markings were developed at the Transport and Road Research Laboratory to enable blind and partially sighted pedestrians to locate themselves on the correct side of segregated shared cycle/ pedestrian routes. The markings were installed at six sites which were monitored in use both for their effectiveness in guiding blind and partially sighted people through a shared facility and also for advantages and disadvantages of installation and durability. It was found that the tactile markings effectively guided 88% of blind and partially sighted trial subjects along the pedestrian side of a footway converted to shared pedestrian/cycle use.
