TY - JOUR PY - 1985// TI - Linking deaths with vehicles and population JO - Traffic engineering and control A1 - Andreassen, D. C. SP - 547 EP - 549 VL - 26 IS - 11 N2 - It has become folklore that there is a law between deaths per registered vehicle and vehicle ownership (vehicles per capita) and that given the population and number of vehicles in a country an 'accurate' estimate of the number of deaths will be produced by the law. This paper explores the origins of the D/V equals . 0003(V/P)** minus **2**/**3 equation and reanalyzes the data. The relationships between D, V and P are investigated for a number of countries over a period of years. The question of correct analytical technique is discussed and the conclusions are that the equation does not apply universally to all countries, that D/V should not be used for international comparisons and that its use to imply increased safety can be fallacious.
