As states begin to re-evaluate marijuana policies, it is important that the health and well-being of adolescents and young adults remain a priority. This article reviews the definition of marijuana, the acute and long-term effects of marijuana, as well as risk factors for dependence. The article also summarizes the current epidemiologic data on marijuana use among adolescents and young adults. It concludes with an update of current marijuana policy as it relates to adolescent health with a discussion of how policy might prevent the harmful effects of marijuana on developing adolescents.
