N2  - We thank Drs Jamshidi and Harrison for their comments. They highlight the importance of careful observation of surgical disease in developing new lines of scientific inquiry. In our case, the implication that rare earth magnets can create intestinal and esophageal anastomoses was not lost on us. We have since also explored this concept in our device development laboratory, the Multidisciplinary Initiative for Surgical Technology Research-Advanced Laboratory. One concern remains that any uncontrolled magnetic object inserted in the body will attract metallic and magnetic objects outside of the body.
