They highlight the importance of careful observation of surgical disease in developing new lines of scientific inquiry. In our case, the implication that rare earth magnets can create intestinal and esophageal anastomoses was not lost on us. We have since also explored this concept in our device development laboratory, the Multidisciplinary Initiative for Surgical Technology Research-Advanced Laboratory.
