Vertical pelvic displacement can be significantly reduced by changing the lap belt configuration. In general, minimum vertical excursion occured with a tight nominal 90-degree belt. Longitudinal excursion was also affected by belt angle and slack/ tension. The overall occupant protection components of a vehicle should be considered as a system. Changes which reduce the probability of one type of injury could affect the overall probability of another injury. With a more effective rollover protection system, an incremental improvement in motor vehicle safety seems probable.
