SP - 40 EP - 48 VL - 1047 IS - N2 - The Transportation Systems Center, in support of research carried out by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's Crash Avoidance Division, has reviewed research into driver attentional processes to assess the potential for the development of methods and techniques for reducing the number of accidents related to attentional lapses. Contained in this paper is a summary of the results of the review with regard to the (a) safety implications of inattention, (b) psychological and physiological indices of inattention, and (c) in-vehicle instrumentation for detecting inattention. Areas of research are suggested that could be valuable in the development of practical attention monitors for invehicle use.
