N2  - The effect of exclusive lanes for nonmotorized transportation (NMT) in Shanghai, China, and Surakarta, Indonesia, is investigated. NMT speeds in exclusive lanes and ordinary (mixed traffic) lanes were compared to examine the impact of the exclusive paths, as it is not possible to conduct before and after studies. Contradicting results were obtained between Shanghai and Surakarta. Exclusive bike lanes were found to have a positive impact in Shanghai: mean riding speeds on the exclusive lanes were significantly faster than those on the ordinary paths. But no significant difference was found between the mean speeds of exclusive and ordinary lanes in Surakarta. The NMT exclusive paths have no effect on the speeds of their NMT modes.
