N2  - This study aimed to learn how women participated in the recovery process after the Kashmir earthquake of October 2005 in the Union Council Langarpura, Azad Kashmir state of Pakistan. Focus group discussions (n=2), semi-structured interviews (n=34) and participant observations were conducted with a total of 48 participants. The results revealed that women in Langarpura played various important roles in the reproductive, productive and community spheres. Women's roles included their normal household responsibilities of cooking, cleaning, and caring for the cattle and also included non-traditional responsibilities such as rebuilding their homes. Women in Langarpura also played productive roles which comprised of participating in income-generating activities such as carrying construction material and water for daily wages, working in fields, dairy farming and working in the education and health sectors. Community roles, on the other hand, consisted of search and rescue activities, caring for the injured, collective cooking and food sharing and the non-traditional roles of supervising the reconstruction of public structures, including schools, roads and water supply facilities and establishing sewing centers to provide vocational training to local women.
