TY - JOUR PY - 2006// TI - Safety Series: Fire Prevention JO - Scrap A1 - No Author(s) Listed, SP - 95 EP - 101 VL - 63 IS - 6 N2 - The effective measures that the scrap processors should take to prevent fire in the scrap industry, are discussed. Fire prevention requires mainly the control of fuel and ignition which can be reduced with proper processing, proper maintenance, and housekeeping. Emergency plan is also very important for the scarp industry as it instructs the employees exactly what to do when a fire occurs. Employees should clean the plant several times a day to make sure there is no paper on the floor, and smoking should be strictly prohibited in the building. They should also be trained on fire prevention, followed by a fire drill that gives them an opportunity to know what is best for their safety. The company should also train employees on specific type of fires, such as turnings and magnesium, that cannot be extinguished with water. Communications is the key to make sure that the employees know about the fire fighting plans and should be aware that prior planning prevents poor performance.
