SP - 14 EP - 15 VL - 14 IS - 10 N2 - The Traffic Training Facility for Junior Learners' project initiated by the Eastern Cape Branch of the South African Road Federation (SARF) is discussed. The main goal of the project was to create a facility in the disadvantaged Motherwell community where learners from pre-school age to Grade 5 could be taught the basics of road safety. The idea was for the learners to be instructed and to be taught the rules of the road in a fun environment, while demonstrating their new knowledge on push scooters, bicycles, or even on foot. The traffic training facility comprises 190 m of 2 m wide premix surfaced and kerbed roadway on 100 mm G3 base on 150 mm compacted sub-grade. The key objectives of the project was also to provide the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM) with a quality product, which could serve as an example and a pilot project for similar initiatives both locally and abroad, and also complete the project within the estimated cost of Rs 234097.
