Factors contributing to this increase include roadway geometry, statutory and advisory speeds, and motorcyclist behavior. Road safety audits (RSAs) serve to identify road segments where crashes are overrepresented in order to apply countermeasures that will reduce crash incidence. This article details how a motorcycle RSA is conducted and how engineering, safety and enforcement countermeasures are selected. The authors examine research efforts aimed at advancing motorcycle safety and look ahead to initiatives on the state and local level designed to improve safety using RSAs.
