TY - JOUR PY - 2017// TI - The study on the influence of conversation with passenger on driver's arousal maintenance and mental workload JO - Transactions of Society of Automotive Engineers of Japan A1 - Kobayashi, Takashi A1 - Fujii, Tatsufumi A1 - Kinosada, Yasunori A1 - Shinohara, Kazumitsu A1 - Hachisuka, Satori A1 - Kakizaki, Masaru SP - 457 EP - 462 VL - 48 IS - 2 N2 - The effect of conversation with a passenger on driver's arousal was examined using a driving simulator.

RESULTS showed that conversation increased driver's arousal while maintaining the level of mental workload within the allowable range. Additionally, driving stability measured by lane-keeping performance was improved by carrying on a conversation. These results indicate that, even though conversation with a passenger is sometimes regarded as a source of distraction, it can be beneficial for a driver's performance especially when that driver's drowsiness is a problem.
