N2  - It is often assumed that the rates and patterns of suicide in Canada are the same as in the United States. However, it has recently been questioned whether they are similar. The current study was designed to explore the rates and patterns empirically. Though restricted by the statistical records themselves, three studies were undertaken including comparisons of rates: (1) by year, 1960-1988 for both sexes; (2) by chronological age/developmental age; and (3) before and after midlife. The results clearly show that the rates and patterns are different in these two countries, with Canada having a higher rate than the United States. One specific finding was that young adult males are a current high-risk group, especially in Canada. Possible explanations for the differences are presented, including reliability of suicide certification, decriminalization of suicide in Canada in 1972, attitudes toward suicide, and socio-correlates of suicide. Implications for prevention and service are provided.<p /> <p>Language: en</p>
