TY - JOUR PY - 1982// TI - Injury: an Ontario (Canada) survey of the societal and personal costs of hospitalized motor vehicle accident victims JO - Journal of traffic medicine A1 - Slocum, R. SP - 54 EP - 55 VL - 10 IS - 4 N2 - The paper describes a broad survey which details the monetary consequences of motor vehicle accident injuries. Values tabulated covering both monetary and non-monetary costs are quoted from the survey carried out in Ontario. Within the study, costs are considered in terms of: (1) health care; (2) vehicle repair or replacement; (3) loss of wages; (4) legal services; and (5) expenses. Non-monetary costs are also considered such as: (1) days lost from normal activities; (2) emotional problems; (3) physical after-effects; and (4) family disruptions. It is considered that the survey represents an important step in the understanding of the consequences of road accidents. Future studies should develop further the sources of accident cost and compensation, as well as increasing the precision of cost estimates and payment. (TRRL)
