TY - JOUR PY - 1979// TI - Spinal cord injuries in motorcyclists JO - Journal of traffic medicine A1 - Yeo, J. D. A1 - International Association for Accident and Traffic Medicine, SP - 37 EP - 39 VL - 7 IS - 3 N2 - The level and degree of spinal cord injury was studied following a survey of 120 motor cyclists admitted to spinal units in Australia between 1973 and 1977. The results of this study suggest that at least 50% of motor cyclists with spinal cord injury become paraplegic from direct injury to the vertebral column. However, when the accident involves an impact to the rider's helmet, the f.f helmet offers better protection to the cervical spine and face. There is an urgent need for further research in helmet design. Compulsory wearing of helmets by motor cyclists should continue. For the present, the full-face helmet with chin piece is recommended.
