TY - JOUR PY - 1997// TI - Retrospective Epidemiological Evaluation of Acute and Overuse Injuries of Muscle and Bone in Windsurfers JO - Journal of sports traumatology and related research A1 - Salvi, M A1 - Velluti, C A1 - Concu, A A1 - Ariu, U A1 - Atzori, A A1 - Dessy, D A1 - Sichel, G SP - 30 EP - 37 VL - 19 IS - 1 N2 - The results of a retrospective epidemiological evaluation of muscle and bone acute and overuse injuries in 123 national and international competition windsurfers are presented. The incidence of all injuries per year was 0.21, and that per athlete per year was 0.003. The mean period of inactivity was 22.7 days. The incidence of acute injuries only was 0. 123 per year (0.0019 per athlete per year). Sprains were the most frequent (33.4%), though only 2 (7.7%) were major, followed by skin and skin and muscle wounds (29.4%), fractures (21.8%) and shoulder dislocation (15.4%). The mean period of inactivity was 15.9 days. The only injuries specifically referable to windsurfing were skin and skin and muscle wounds caused by the cutting edge of the keel fin, and knee and ankle sprains and fractures caused by the foot straps. The incidence of overuse injuries per year was 0.08, and that per athlete per year was 0.001. The mean period of inactivity was 6.8 days. Low back pain in flexion was the most common (23.6%). Like the enthesites observed in other districts (21.9%), it was at least partly due to insufficient training and/or warming up, noted in 37.4% of the athletes.
