N2  - The primary factors that affect the validity of the Polished Stone Value (PSV) test for predicting the ability of stone chips to provide a safe braking surface for road users is evaluated. Literature describing research and development in the area of skid resistance and PSV is reviewed. Experimental work conducted to determine the effects of the laboratory operators, the test equipment, sampling and crushing on the variability of PSV results is described. In addition, field tests yielded a distinct relationship between traffic volumes and skid resistance of surfaces in service, for two different sources with the same PSV. The crushing process, sampling and specimen preparation can alter the PSV of an aggregate, but experienced, independent test operators negate the effects of specimen preparation. Overall, the PSV test has excellent repeatability and low variance in the results. The experiments confirmed the excellent repeatability and the applicability of the PSV for the New Zealand situation.     <p>Language: en</p>
