TY - JOUR PY - 1990// TI - Traffic engineering in Australia. a twenty year retrospective JO - Australian road research A1 - Howie, DJ SP - 30 EP - 35 VL - 20 IS - 1 N2 - This paper is a rather unstructured wander through the recent history of traffic engineering in Australia from the viewpoint of someone who has, by and large, been a practitioner in the field. It discusses the challenges that traffic engineers have faced in their work, some of the important developments in tools of trade and techniques available in the profession and speculates about some of the changes that could occur in the next decade. Traffic engineering as a profession has changed in response to changing community expectations and better understanding of how we can influence the traffic environment. We would be naive if we thought that we had reached a pinnacle in the professions development - if anything the most challenging times are still in front of us.
