TY - JOUR PY - 1984// TI - Capacity and delays at roundabouts: A literature review JO - Australian road research A1 - Troutbeck, Rod J. SP - 205 EP - 216 VL - 14 IS - 4 N2 - Roundabouts have been used since the early 1900s but capacity design formulae have only recently been developed. The development of these design formulae is traced from Wardrop's weaving equation through to the equations recently documented by the Transport and Road Research Laboratory. The main thrust of the U. K. research has been directed towards defining an empirical linear relationship between entry capacity and circulation flow. At the same time there has been considerable effort in establishing design formulae based on gap acceptance theory. The application to Australian design guides is discussed. It is concluded that the gap acceptance techniques currently used in Australia to estimate roundabout capacity should continue to be used, although the techniques should be further examined with field data. Procedures for estimating delays are also discussed.
