A1 - Collet, C. SP - 177 EP - 182 VL - 16 IS - 3 N2 - Ethylene glycol, a major component in the making of an antifreeze for car radiators, is a frequent cause of severe intoxication. As a rule, rapid diagnosis is crucial so that appropriate therapy can be begun to improve considerably the prognosis. The authors report the case of a voluntary intoxication by ingestion of ethylene glycol and household products with ethanol. The treatment of this type of intoxication developed by these two alcohols is not obvious because of their metabolic interaction. The use of 4-methylpyrazole was therefore delayed because of the particularity of this intoxication. The half-life of ethylene glycol was prolonged to 14 hours.
